Day 4

There was complete silence on Day 3 and I’d like to blame it on the fact that I was too weak from hunger to write…but I can’t. I was just plain uninspired by Sunday’s menu and I just couldn’t bring myself to write it down.

BUT I did keep to it and here’s what I limited myself to eat-

Breakfast: Smoked salmon with a large tomato and a hard boiled egg. Tea with skimmed milk and a bottle of water.

Lunch: Home-made vegetable soup and two slices of wholemeal bread with a hummus spread.

Dinner: Steak with large leafy salad and baked garlic. One glass of red wine and a bottle of water.

I had three snacks - apple, pear and compote.

Monday bloody Monday - I wanted to start with a real bang so I went with two cups of Bran cereal with skimmed milk for breakfast, all washed down with a coffee with skimmed milk and sweetener.

Was still hungry so I had one bite out of my 11.00am banana snack.

Lunch will be a baked potato …yes that’s what I said, and I’m looking at a large potato at that. No butter, but a plain nothing added can of tuna right on top.  A glass of carrot juice and water.

Dinner to follow.

Day 2

Day two; not sure if I mentioned my weight. It’s kind of important given that this blog is about my diet.

Well, I went on the scale Friday morning and immediately got off and checked to find out why the scale was lying to me.

Don’t worry, it won’t lie again. I threw it out of the window so no more lying scale.

Why did I react so violently? Well for one thing, I don’t weight 16st. 7/8 lbs. How would you react to that kind of stark falsehood? At most I would say I’m 16 st. 3 ½ lbs.

Ok, Ok,  maybe 16st 5lbs but that’s the max. I think that explains my frustration and anger.

So I had the cereal and the snack and I’m hungry but it’s much too early to change the diet at this stage.

Will stick to today’s menu and here is Saturday’s menu:

Breakfast: Two-egg omelette with avocado, 2 slices Mozzarella cheese with tomato. Coffee with skimmed milk.

Lunch: Beef with peas and carrots. A small salad. Diet soda.

Dinner: Grilled salmon, sautéed broccoli with pepper. Lettuce salad. One glass of red wine and 4/5 thin slices of watermelon.

Snack of strawberries and blueberries.

Losing Weight - Day 1

It was my 62nd birthday last Wednesday, and as I glanced at my reflection as I passed a shop window, I knew it was time. Time to take hold of my spreading waistline, time to change my chips-with-everything menu, time to start a new life.

Why the sudden revelation? Well, yes,  62 was a bit of a spur, but what really opened  the door to my new reality was a truly shocking headline from SKY News which read  “Work Till You Drop, Retirement Age Change”,  and I realised that if I had to continue to work for another eight years I NEEDED TO GET FIT AGAIN.

Can you imagine, 70 is the new 60, but that’s where it stops;  50 is still 50 and of course those of you who are younger well  ………  what can I say, don’t squander it.

OK, down to the Diet business, I’m starting on July 9th and there is no going back. If you want to do this with me then there is no going back for you either. I’m talking about a complete change in how to eat, what to eat and when to eat, and you are welcome to join me! I am not going down the “Visualize a thin you ...bullshit. I am just going to EAT LESS and do MORE EXERCISE. As of July 9th I am entering into a new lifestyle; nothing that has gone before will apply.

If you want to join me, this is what will be happening. I’m not going to list all the foods that mustn’t be eaten. I’m not going to start counting calories. I will instead suggest a complete daily menu (for the following day), and if anyone out there is doing it with me you can suggest your preference.

I am going to create my own twitter feed and I will post my menus and let you know how it’s all going. You can let me know how your diet is going and this way we can give each other encouragement.

OK, a couple of “must do’s” - I will write down everything I eat and if you’re with me, you must do the same. This way we can see what we have been eating and it will be easier to avoid temptation. I will have three meals and three snacks during the day and I will not miss a meal.

It is also important that we write down what exercise we did and how long for. We must also drink lots of water everyday, at least 2 litres, or about 9 cups of water.

My suggested menu for Friday the 9th -

Breakfast - Cereal:  choose from the following: 2/3 shredded wheat , Bran Flakes –a cup full; All Bran - a cup full, 2/3  Weetabix. Use skimmed milk only. I’m going to add one banana to my breakfast and wash it down with tea and skimmed milk (no sugar, but I will use a sugar substitute.)

Lunch - A can of tuna with a mixed vegetable salad. The dressing will be either vinegar with lemon juice, Balsamic Vinegar, soy sauce. You can use one tablespoon only of olive oil. I will probably have a tomato juice with that.

Dinner - Vegetable soup (consommé). Grilled chicken with peas and carrots, one glass of red wine only, one slice of pineapple.

Snacks - at 11.00 am; 4.30 pm and 9.30 pm mostly fruit or an apple sauce, compote etc

That’s it for Friday
